The Perfect Fit Guide: How to Measure for Velvetkay Press-on Nails
One size does not fit all.
Sizing assurance for first-time clients
Choosing the right size can feel uncertain at first. While all sales are final for hygiene reasons, first-time clients may request a one-time size adjustment on unused nails if sizing is an issue. Please contact us before use — we’re always happy to help.
At Velvetkay, our press-on nails are handcrafted to mimic a salon-quality gel manicure. To ensure they look natural, feel comfortable, and last for weeks, finding your perfect fit is the most critical step.
Please note: As all Velvetkay sets are handcrafted, all sales are final for hygiene reasons. We highly recommend taking a few minutes to carefully measure your nails before purchasing.
Here is your step-by-step guide to finding your custom size.
Step 1: Choose Your Method
You don't need professional tools. You can use a soft measuring tape or just a piece of paper.
Method 1: Soft Measuring Tape (Easiest)
-
Place a soft measuring tape horizontally across the widest part of your natural nail.
-
Make sure the tape sits flat against the curve of your nail (snug, but not pressing down too hard).
-
Read the measurement in millimeters (mm) from side wall to side wall.
-
Repeat for all 10 fingers.
Method 2: Paper & Ruler (No Tape Needed)
-
Cut a small, rectangular strip of paper or tape.
-
Wrap the strip across the widest part of your nail.
-
Use a pen to mark the start and end points where the paper meets your nail edges.
-
Place the paper strip against a standard ruler to measure the distance between the two marks.
-
Write down your measurements in millimeters (mm).
Step 2: Find Your Size
Compare your measurements (Thumb, Index, Middle, Ring, Pinky) with our standard size chart below.
| Size | Thumb | Index | Middle | Ring | Pinky |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| XS | 14mm | 10mm | 11mm | 10mm | 8mm |
| S | 15mm | 11mm | 12mm | 11mm | 9mm |
| M | 16mm | 12mm | 13mm | 12mm | 10mm |
| L | 17mm | 13mm | 14mm | 13mm | 11mm |
(Note: As each set is handcrafted in our studio, slight variations of approx. 1mm may occur. This is a mark of artistry, not a defect.)
Step 3: Studio Recommendations
In Between Sizes? Always Size UP. If your measurement falls between two sizes (e.g., you measure 15.5mm but the sizes are 15mm and 16mm), always choose the larger size.
-
Why? You can easily file down the sides of a larger press-on using the Nail File included in your complimentary Tool Kit for a perfect fit. You cannot make a small nail bigger.
Measure Both Hands It is common for fingers on your left and right hands to have slightly different widths. Please measure both to ensure accuracy.
